An Unlimited God

Do you ever wish you were less attached to your phone? That you could set it down and walk away? It’s something I strive for, but most of the time I fail miserably. Until the inevitable happened last month.

As I went to take a picture on my phone, I received the dreaded message that my storage was almost full. Unfortunately, this happens every couple of months. When it does, my husband needs to walk me through the steps (again) of how to upload my photos and videos to our OneDrive in order to free up space on my phone. To my husband’s dismay, no matter how many times he shows me, my brain cannot retain this information.

As I was in the process of uploading hundreds of photos and videos, another message popped up on my phone. It stated that I had used 90 percent of the data in my monthly plan. One second later, while I was still trying to process that message, I received another message stating that I had now used all my data for the month. I was shocked! I was only on the second day of my plan. How in the world had I used all the data for an entire month in the first two days?

Suddenly, I realized I was not connected to our home wireless network. I started to feel sick to my stomach. How was I going to make it through the rest of the month without using data or accruing excessive overage charges? I looked online to see how much it would cost to increase my data for the month, but the cost seemed unreasonable. I didn’t want to increase my monthly allowance, either, because it usually isn’t an issue.

An Unlimited God

I decided to do the only thing I could do—I went into the settings of my phone and turned off my data. For the next twenty-eight days, I would not use data except when absolutely necessary.

Surprisingly, I made it through the rest of the month with only going over my data plan by .2 gigabytes.

There was no scrolling Facebook while I was sitting in the car, waiting to pick up my girls from dance class, and no sending Marco Polo or Voxer messages to friends while I was taking a walk. My random pockets of time away from the home wireless were virtually phone-free. While it was a struggle at times, it was a refreshing break from my phone.

As I reflected back on that month, I was comforted by the knowledge that those messages I received on my phone about having reached the limits of what I am allowed do not apply to God’s data plan.

Unlimited Storage

God has unlimited storage. You can unload worry after worry and prayer after prayer upon him. He will never send you a message saying you’re about to run out of storage. In 1 Peter 5:7 the apostle Peter tells us, “Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.” ALL. Not some, not most, but all your anxiety. God wants us to come to him with all our things. Not just the big things, but all things.

We are also encouraged that if we approach God, we will find him. In both Matthew’s and Luke’s Gospels, we are told that for all who knock, the door will be opened. God wants, desires and longs for us to come to him.  He will always be there for us, and he will never run out of storage.

How amazing is it that God has room for every single one of us to come to him, and he cares about the littlest details of all of our lives? Unlimited storage!

Unlimited Data

You do not need a special data plan or even high-speed wireless to connect with God. Not only will God never say “storage almost full” to us, but he is always there for us. Morning, noon, and evening we can come to him. Psalm 55:17 says, “I will pray morning, noon, and night, pleading aloud with God; and he will hear and answer” (TLB).  And in 1 Thessalonians 5:17 (NIV) two words provide instruction for us: “pray continually,” and they are quickly followed by the admonition, “for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus” in verse 18. Continually. God wants us coming to him all the time.

I know sometimes I may feel like I sound like a broken record to God, uttering the same prayers repeatedly. While I know I get easily annoyed when my kids ask me the same question for the hundredth time, God does not. When we come to him, he is eager to listen. We never need to worry if we have prayed too much and will soon be maxing out our data plan.

God’s Unlimited Plans

Thankfully, God has unlimited storage and unlimited data. He is limitless in his love for us, and he desires us to seek him with all our heart, all our minds, and all our strength. He is always there, always present, always listening.

That month I endured with no data on my phone was a month of frustration, yet also of gratefulness. My desire to hold my phone less became possible, not due to my strength, but through his provision.

I’m thankful for the gift of prayer and how I can come before the King of Kings whenever and wherever I need to.
