Back in March, at the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic, John Krasinski launched a YouTube show he called Some Good News, which quickly became a favorite of many people. The hashtag #somegoodnews immediately started trending, and everyone was sharing their good news with the world.

His videos include clips that bring tears of joy: an older man singing to his wife through a window, a girl on the last day of her chemo treatment having a car parade, and celebrations as coronavirus patients were discharged from the hospital. Every week, I was moved to tears by the good news.

He also added humor to his videos with funny weather reports, lack of any sports news, and what he wears on his bottom half: swim trunks, which belie the sport coat and tie he wears on top.

The world was desperate for some good news, and John Krasinski delivered every week for eight weeks. Personally, I had found myself in need of break from social media for a few weeks because I couldn’t take the heaviness of the posts being shared. I needed good news. Also, I needed to share some good news. Before I logged off for my few weeks fast, I had seen a picture of chalk drawing a friend had done that resembled a stained-glass window. I immediately knew I wanted to make one too.

The next day, I grabbed my kids’ chalk and decorated our sidewalk with a cross inside a stained glass window and a Bible verse. I chose my current favorite, Romans 15:13: “May the God of hope fill you will all joy and peace as you trust in him, so you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit” (NIV).

I live on a quiet cul de sac; however, numerous people have been out walking more. I was amazed at the number of people who stopped to read the verse and look at the picture I’d drawn. We even noticed the Amazon delivery person taking a picture of it. I was, in a minimal way, sharing some good news with others.

Here’s the thing: if you are a Christian—if the blood of Jesus has saved you—you too have some good news that needs to be shared. Sure, people enjoy seeing videos of good news like online proms and people singing from their balconies, but what they need is THE GOOD NEWS. They need to hear about Jesus’ life, death, and resurrection. They need to hear about his coming again, and about how they, too, can spend eternity with him in heaven.

In Romans 10:14-15, we read, “How, then, can they call on the one they have not believed in? And how can they believe in the one of whom they have not heard? And how can they hear without someone preaching to them? And how can anyone preach unless they are sent? As it is written: “How beautiful are the feet of those who bring good news!” (NIV).

I want to be a bringer of good news. When the news outlets and social media are ablaze with terrible, unimaginable acts of injustice, political wars, and all kinds of hysteria, I want to be a light in the darkness. I want to share the hope and peace of Jesus with a lost and broken world.

Here’s a critical part of sharing the good news: it doesn’t stop with what Jesus did 2000 years ago. God is at work TODAY! We need to share what God is doing for us in the here and now. How is he currently working in your life? We need to share our good news with a world that desperately needs to hear it. It doesn’t need to be a story about a grand miracle; it can be a story about a small but significant work Jesus is doing.

I’ll go first. I’m a life group leader for my oldest daughter in our church’s middle school ministry. When she started middle school three years ago as a sixth grader, I knew I wanted to serve in that ministry and be her leader. We experienced an incredible three years, and now she is moving on to our high school ministry. My second daughter is only a year and a half younger and one grade level behind my oldest. It always hurt my heart a little that I would not be able to be her leader as well. but I was thankful a dear friend of mine was her life group leader. Recently, my friend’s husband took a new position within his company, and they are moving, which means she is stepping down as a life group leader. I’m sad they are moving; however, I am now able to step in and be a life group leader for my second daughter, something I longed to do but never thought would be a possibility.

Some might call that luck or coincidence, but to this mama’s heart, that was Jesus hearing the whispers of my heart’s desire. A small but significant work!

We all need some good news, so please share.
